Write Sentences Using Colours

One of the aims of these exercises is to make children identify common colours. The second objective is to make children read better and we have included similar sounding words (rhyming words) in the text. These activities would also help them to decode words and improve their spelling. Let them read the sentences and be familiar with the words. Periodically give them dictation of these sentences. Ask the children to make sentences of their own with colours.

The child needs to fill in the blanks with the name of the colour, by drawing clues from the image provided.

Tips for parents:

Your child may have difficulty in reading even the common words. As a parent, you may be very unhappy or disappointed with your child’s effort. Don’t show your emotions to your child. The child is desperately looking for your approval. Pointing out too many mistakes would only make her/him lose confidence.

If they don’t do well don’t criticise them. Wherever possible, praise their efforts.

Encourage them to do more. When your child makes even a small improvement, hug her/him and praise her/him. Physical contact acts as a good emotional support.

A picture dictionary is useful for teaching colours. Many picture dictionaries have short sentences. Buy a good picture dictionary or search the internet for picture dictionaries for kids. Several picture dictionaries can be downloaded free.
